Short puts that are written in a margin account are always considered naked. In order to write naked puts, the account must be approved for level 4 options trading and have at least $10,000 total account equity. Cash secured puts are not permitted in margin accounts. Accounts that do not meet the level 4 or $10,000 equity requirements can only write puts as part of a spread.
